Utilization of Certified Compostable Bags - Canadian Experiences - BioCycle AGM

Presentation Abstract
Title: Utilization of Certified Compostable Bags - Canadian Experiences

Prepared for BioCycle Global 2011 Conference, San Diego, CA

Presented by VisionQuest Environmental Strategies Corp.

In 2010, VisionQuest Environmental Strategies Corp. was hired to undertake a National inventory of centralized composting facilities across Canada including an assessment of those that accepted certified compostable and biodegradable liner
bags. This article summarizes the findings from the assessment as well as discussing key parameters for success when designing and implementing residential source separated organics (SSO) food collection programs.
Considerations such as the "yuck" factor from the kitchen to the curb, cost comparisons between kraft paper and certified compostable bags and municipal material capture rate comparisons are also included.
